The increasing number of social networking sites, as well as the number of their users, has become worrisome for the scientists investigating the impact of media on body image. The aim of this review was to provide a relevant literature on association between social media and body dissatisfaction among various populations. Many studies have explored and have shown this association, but as expected, the findings were not entirely consistent. Moreover, mediating variables that may alter the relationship between these concepts were reported, and also different sources of media and social networking cites were compared. In addition, gender differences were also discussed, as well as other negative outcomes associated with social network use.
